kcalThe first time I made a calzone, it wasn’t planned. I had leftover pizza dough and a few simple fillings in the fridge, and I didn’t feel like making a full pizza. So I folded everything inside the dough and baked it, not really expecting much.
What came out of the oven surprised me. A warm, golden crust with a soft, stuffed center packed with melted cheese and flavorful toppings. It felt like a pizza, but more personal—like all the best parts were sealed inside one pocket.
Since then, I have made calzones many times, testing different fillings and dough textures to get the balance just right. It has become one of my favorite ways to turn simple ingredients into something satisfying and comforting.
If you have never tried making one at home, this is a recipe that makes the whole process feel easy, fun, and rewarding.
Ingredients
1 lbs prepared pizza dough if frozen needs defrosted and if refrigerated, ready to go.
1 cup prepared pizza sauce
1 cup pepperoni
1 cup sausage
2 cups shredded mozzarella
1 cup ricotta cheese
1 egg
2 tbsp water
Directions
- Preheat oven to 475. Spray pan or line with parchment paper
- Divide the dough into 2 equally sized pieces. Roll each piece into a 1/4″ thick circle.
- Place the filling on half of each circle (pizza sauce, ricotta, pepperoni, salami and shredded mozzarella). Make sure to leave the edges clean to allow for sealing the calzone. Fold the side over the filling and crimp the edges.
- Wisk together egg and water to make an egg wash for the top of calzone to help brown.
- Place calzones on a baking sheet, leaving space apart. Cut a small vent on the top of each calzone. Brush the tops with Egg wash. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Serve with a side of sauce for dipping.
Notes
- We like our calzones giant. You can make them half the size for a smaller portion. We can’t usually eat the whole thing but we love having them for leftovers. You can add any other toppings that your prefer on your pizza.
