minutesI have lived in different places over the years, but my first real experience with steak salad was in Pittsburgh, PA. At the time, I honestly thought that’s how steak salad was served everywhere.
As I traveled and later moved away, I quickly realized that Pittsburgh-style steak salad is something unique. What surprised me most was the addition of crispy French fries on top. It sounded unusual at first, but after trying it more than once, I understood why it’s so popular—it completely changes the texture and flavor in the best way.
After making it at home for my husband, I saw the same reaction I had when I first discovered it. He loved it immediately, and we both agreed it was something worth adding to our regular meal rotation.
Through my own experience, I’ve found that the combination of crisp lettuce, juicy steak, fresh vegetables, bold dressing, and hot fries creates a hearty and satisfying meal that feels more like a full dinner than a simple salad.
Even now, this is one of those recipes I make when I want something filling, nostalgic, and a little different from a typical salad.
Ingredients
4 6 oz Thin cut steaks
Steak Seasoning of your choice (I used Famous Daves)
1 pound Bag of thin-cut french fries
2 heads romaine lettuce (cut bite-sized and washed)
1 jar pepperoncini
1 red, orange or yellow pepper sliced into strips
1 cup grated cheddar cheese, shredded
1 bottle chunky blue cheese or ranch dressing, your preference
Directions
- Cook the French fries according to the directions on the bag. I cook mine in an air fryer for extra crispiness. Season with salt and pepper.
- Cut lettuce into bite-size pieces and wash it in a salad spinner. Set aside.
- Season steak with any seasoning you prefer, grill or cook on stove top until done to your preferences. Slice into bite size pieces and set aside while you prepare the salad.
- On the plate layer lettuce, pepperoncinis, peppers, steak, cheddar cheese, French fries and top with dressing of our choice.
- You can add any of your favorite toppings and vegetables to this salad!
Notes
- I usually use one of the dressings from the produce section like Marie’s. I find they have a more restaurant-style favor.
